When talking to a prospective associate, I get this question alot; "Do I have to sell? I'm not good at selling—and isn't that what Watkins is all about? "
What they are usually trying to ask in most cases is, "Can I join Watkins and have a successful, income-producing business without retailing products?" And, the answer is...
Yes, you can have a very successful and extremely profitable Watkins business without approaching retail customers! You do not have to focus on selling products. Nor do any of your team members.
Now you may be saying at this point, "Wait a minute. Shouldn't all Watkins associates be looking for customers and selling products? After all, aren't we in the Direct SELLING industry?"
It is true that we are in the Direct Selling industry. But that's only part of the picture with Watkins. The whole picture is that Watkins is a company in the Direct Selling and Network Marketing industries.
The Network Marketing side of this business is often overlooked, but it's actually the more powerful of the two. As an independent Watkins associate, you have the potential to earn far more income by focusing on Network Marketing than on Direct Selling. In fact, EVERY SINGLE ONE of the top earners in Watkins focus their energy on Network Marketing, NOT Direct Selling.
I can explain how Network Marketing can theoretically allow you to build a team of associates that generates bonus income without anyone retailing products. In reality, however, there are bound to be some team members who enjoy retailing, and there are bound to be individuals who ask to order products as customers from you. So, your business will always be somewhat of a blend between Network Marketing and Direct Selling.
Still, the important point (that you may not have considered before) is that you CAN have a succesful Watkins business WITHOUT focusing on retailing yourself, and WITHOUT searching for people who want to "sell Watkins." And, in fact, your team could likely grow much faster by NOT focusing on retailing.
Now you may be asking, "If the Network Marketing side of Watkins is so powerful, why aren't all associates doing it?" There are two main reasons:
Let's delve into that second reason. You see, it's easy for new associates to understand how a Direct Selling business works, so most latch onto that aspect of Watkins. But very few are familiar with how a successful Network Marketing business works.

But, how many new Watkins associates have previously been around someone who has built a successful Network Marketing business? Very few. So, new associates find it harder to grasp the the Network Marketing side of Watkins.
Next, let's outline how Network Marketing works, in case you haven't had a chance to learn about it before. Network Marketing is based on a simple concept: A lot of people each doing a little can be more productive than one person doing a lot.
Here's an example of what that really means: Let's say you establish a group of people who have each joined Watkins as associates. But their only reason for joining is to buy products for their own family at the associate's discount, and they never sell to anyone else. That might not seem very productive. But, guess what? It doesn't take many people doing that before your group can be using many more Watkins products than the amount being sold by any one of the top retailers in Watkins.
So, in a way, there's a "selling" side and a "buying" side to Watkins. The selling side comes from Direct Selling, in which associates retail products to customers. The buying side comes from Network Marketing, in which associates buy products for their own use. Certainly, it's possible to blend both sides; but, ask yourself, in general, would you rather be in a "selling" business (with you doing all the work of making sales to customers) or in a "buying" business (with your team of associates simply buying products for their own use)?
Remember how we said that most associates can relate to Direct Selling because they're familiar with companies like
What if a company opened large warehouses around the country, where you could buy things for significantly less than at other stores? And let's say that for the privilege of shopping there, they charged an annual fee of $45. It would still be a great value, because your savings on purchases could more than cover that membership fee in just a few visits.
Well, one such company has opened 473 warehouses and has gotten 46 million people to buy memberships and spend 52 billion dollars in their stores! Yes, you know them as Costco and millions have paid $45 to join just to be able to buy wholesale.
Now, let's compare Costco to Watkins. For a $39.95 starter kit, you can buy all the Watkins products at a discount of 25% or more. The two companies have a very similar concept: Pay a membership fee to join; buy products at a wholesale discount.
But here's where Costco falls short: If you tell your friends about Costco, and your friends each buy a membership, does Costco send you a bonus check for 5% to 10% of whatever your friends buy at Costco? Of course not. But Watkins does! Not only that, but when your friends tell others about Watkins, your friends can earn a bonus, and you can, too!
The foundational concept of Network Marketing is about people helping other people learn how to buy excellent products at a wholesale discount. It's not about selling.
Now, of course, any associate who is using Network Marketing techniques to sponsor new team members will regularly run across some people who want to join Watkins to sell products, and that's fine (you'd certainly want to help them join your team because it would generate additional sales volume). But, you don't have to focus on finding people who want to sell. You can confidently tell prospects that they can be successful in Watkins WITHOUT selling.
